Ever feel like you leave the house with your makeup on point, only to have your oily eyelids sabotage your look? Desperately resorting to makeup forums on reddit or Sephora for tips on getting your eye makeup to last? There are solutions for working around oily eyelids (we’ll share some with you), but that’s only half the battle. The other half is finding the right eyeliner.
Important Ingredients in a Long-Lasting Eyeliner
Whether you have oily eyelids or you live in a hot, humid place, you don’t want your eye makeup melting half way through the day. Fortunately, there are some key ingredients you can look for which are common to long-wearing eyeliners and cosmetics.
According to cosmetic chemist Ni’Kita Wilson, quoted in Allure, film-forming additives like silicones (dimethicone, cyclomethicone and cyclopentasiloxane) and polymers (copolymers and crosspolymers) give cosmetics important staying power. They also make the product more resistant to sweat, humidity, oily eyelids, and oily skin.
Liquid Eyeliner is The Best Eyeliner for Oily Eyelids
Eyeliner pencils, even when they’re waterproof, have a waxier consistency than their liquid eyeliner sisters. This makes them more likely to smudge, smear, or transfer to your upper lid. For a long-lasting, smudge-proof finish, liquid eyeliner beats other liners in a race to the end of the day.
A water-based liquid liner is also more faux lash-friendly. Eye pencils and waterproof liners damage the adhesive on eyelash extensions and strip lashes.
Our liquid liner is completely oil-free, because who needs more oil when you already have enough of it on your eyelids? If you’re a faux-lash girl, BeautyGARDE Oil-Free Liquid Eyeliner is perfect for you, too. Copolymers give the eyeliner the smudge-proof, water-resistant quality you need when you’re feeling sweaty or it’s humid outside.
Got sensitive eyes? We haven’t forgotten about you! The liquid liner is hypoallergenic, gluten-free, paraben-free, fragrance-free, cruelty-free and rigorously tested. Want to know more? Read our guide to the Best Hypoallergenic Eye Makeup and Eye Makeup Remover.
With a unique elongated, micro-fine applicator, you have the control and precision you need to execute a perfect wing or cat eye. The silicone nib glides smoothly over your lash line and the pigment-rich, jet black color lasts all day without fading. It’s easy to use, and when you’re ready to remove it at night, BeautyGARDE Oil-Free Liquid Eyeliner comes off easily, too.
How Can I Get My Eye Makeup to Last All Day?
Do you wear eye cream or moisturizer at night? For those with oily eyelids, it’s important to make sure that your eye cream is adequately removed before you do your makeup in the morning. Daytime eye moisturizers can also make it difficult for your eye makeup to fully set in the morning. If you have consistent trouble with eyeshadow creasing and eyeliner smudging or wearing off, you may want to reconsider any moisturizer you use around your eyes.
To start with a fresh canvas each morning, make sure your eyelids are clean, dry, and free of eye cream. Before you apply liner to oily eyelids, you want to create an appropriate foundation. Just like you need the right eyeliner, the right eyeshadow primer is important as well.
Some primers are too creamy for an oily lid, and will leave them with some residual moisture. You may want to experiment with a few primers before you settle on one that works for you. One primer to consider is Nars Smudge-Proof Eyeshadow Base. It’s a lightweight eye primer with a blend of polymer and mineral powder that dries quickly. Beginning with a polymer base under your liner will give it stronger smudge resistance and long wear. Nars base was a NewBeauty 2018 Award Winner.
After applying your primer, keep your eyes closed for 20-30 seconds to make sure it’s completely set. When it’s dry, do your eyeshadow, and then apply your BeautyGARDE Oil-Free Liquid Eyeliner. Keep your eyes closed for a few seconds after you put on the liner, so it completely dries as well. Then go ahead and do your eyelash primer and mascara. Some people like to apply setting spray once their makeup is completely done, so they have a little extra insurance against oily eyelids or humid weather. If you’re worried about oiliness later in the day, it might give you the finish you’re after.
Here are some more tips for smudge-proof makeup that will last all day.
